As a vocal Member of the Welsh Parliament, Janet remains passionately committed to local issues. Since her first election to the Senedd in 2011, Janet has overseen the delivery of a zebra crossing for Glan Conwy, the saving of a playground in Llanrwst, the end of highly controversial enforcement practices in Llandudno, speed limit reductions in Cwm Penmachno, progress on flood alleviation in the Conwy Valley, and much more.
Janet has held many roles in frontline politics throughout this period, including Shadow Minister for Local Government, Shadow Minister for Social Care, Children, Young People, and Older People, and most recently Shadow Minister for Environment, Energy, and Rural Affairs. She is also the Chair of the Welsh Conservative Group in the Senedd, Chair of the Cross Party Group on Small Shops, and Chair of the Senedd's Petitions Committee.
Janet has consistently worked to call for more investment in local health and social services – particularly for the elderly and those suffering with mental health illnesses. She also regularly challenged the Heath Minister on BCUHB's special measures rating, over the past five years. Janet has argued for the reduction in red tape for farmers; the backing of Welsh food production; a full rollout of superfast broadband to rural areas; measures to develop a stronger economy; and for the reduction of waste in Government.
As an entrepreneur, Janet has founded a number of successful local businesses. She is supportive of new start-ups and established SMEs, and actively worked to assist such businesses throughout the Coronavirus pandemic. Janet is married to Gareth Saunders. They live in Llandudno and have two children – Adam and Hannah.
