We have taken back control of our legal immigration system by ending free movement and introducing a new points-based system, but we must address illegal immigration in order to properly control our borders and prevent further loss of life.
• Our New Plan for Immigration is a step change in our posture towards illegal migration and the criminals that facilitate it. It will be fair but firm, based on three objectives. 1. To better protect and support those in genuine need of refuge. 2. To deter illegal entry and break the business model of the people smugglers that enable it. 3. To remove more easily those with no right to be here.
• This Government promised to take a common-sense approach to controlling immigration – both legal and illegal. Our New Plan for Immigration will deliver on that promise.
